Should You Play Cyberpunk 2077 in 2022?

Should you play Cyberpunk 2077 in 2022? Is this the right to jump right into the controversial action FPS of CD Projekt Red?

Cyberpunk 2077 was released back on December 10th, 2020 as a chaotic mess full of performance issues and strange glitches. After more than a year, the game remains to be a mere fragment of what was promised in terms of content and gameplay. It is definitely more stable in terms of performance, though. A great number of glitches that affected gameplay have been fixed as well. Yet again, we were never that upset about the bugs and technical issues. What disappointed us too much is that the game was devoid of all those promised content from wall-running to NPCs with a complete life cycle.

We even don’t have cops trying to pursue us around the city, instead, they would spawn right in front of us with a handful of attack drones. Well, they also fixed that as the cops now spawn a couple of meters ahead of you or behind a building, so that you don’t see them…teleporting.  That being said, after all of those patches and hotfixes, Cyberpunk 2077 did come a long way. Not in the direction of the game that we have seen in E3 or the live shows called Night City Wire though. Instead of a massive and interactive open world, we have a city that looks amazing but feels hollow.

So should you play Cyberpunk 2077? Is one of the most controversial titles in the world of gaming worth your time?

Why was Cyberpunk 2077 disappointing?

The world of gaming has delved into the possible answers to this question over the last year. Why did the most anticipated game of the last decade come out in this unpolished state full of laughable bugs and glitches?

Well, most players believe that Cyberpunk 2077 could have been such an amazing game if it had 2 years more to release. Though the investors and the upper management rushed the devs in order to sell more and get richer; which sounds ironic when the game depicts greedy megacorporations in a dark future. The hype for the ‘next big thing’ grew, so do corporate greed.

As a result, we now have an incomplete game with a massive amount of cut content. What’s sad is that even though a year has passed since its release, Cyberpunk 2077 still needs a lot of work in terms of bugs and glitches. It is impossible to see the promised “the next generation of open-world games” in it and it feels like it has already missed that chance.

Here’s why you should play Cyberpunk 2077

You need to adjust your expectations before answering the question in the title. If you want a somewhat rewarding experience with a decent action story enriched with dilemmas and twists then yes; you should play Cyberpunk 2077 as soon as the next update drops in 2022. Though you might prepare yourself for bugs and glitches that will affect immersion for sure. Other than those, you might want to play the game as it has a few things that it got right.

  • Great gunplay
  • Night City looks good
  • Decent story

Although it does not have all those features we have been promised over the last 5 years, it still feels that there has been passion during the development. While it is clear that the developers were not able to prove their commitment to the project fully, Cyberpunk 2077 is decent enough to buy at a sale if you really want to play it and don’t care about all that promised content and a meaningful depiction of a dark dystopian city.

Here’s why you shouldn’t play Cyberpunk 2077

That said, the answer is different for people who have different expectations. If you want a solid RPG experience set in a dark cyberpunk world reinforced with decent gameplay mechanics and an interactive open world, you probably shouldn’t play Cyberpunk 2077. Especially if you have been waiting for it for more than 8 years and if you have been patient enough to wait for one more, the game is still not the “dystopian cyberpunk” title you have dreamed of.

It is still a chaotic mess that tries to offer something meaningful. But other than its short main story and a couple of fun side quests, CDPR’s most anticipated title is not worth your time. It is a game with a cyberpunk theme and it still prevents you from choosing your gender. In a world of freedom where everybody gets to do anything thanks to cybernetics, you are not even able to add a prosthetic arm to your body. The game forces you to wear weird hats for a better armor stat. The game wants to believe you that it has “RPG elements” by showing off with its lifepaths. Yet they are nothing but a couple of introductory quests that do not have a massive impact on your gameplay.

It is not the RPG you have been waiting for and it will never be that game, to be honest. Cyberpunk 2077 needs a complete rework both in terms of mechanics, gameplay, and story as it fails to deliver what was promised in every aspect. That’s why everything about it either feels empty or incomplete.

If the devs released the game without a single bug or if they had another year to work on it; CP2077 wouldn’t be the game we have been waiting for. This is exactly why it will continue to be a huge disappointment in the world of gaming. And unfortunately, it will never be fixed with patches with huge file sizes, numerous updates, or free DLCs.
